Three discs, a light bag, and a free afternoon. That's the usual entry cost. Many municipal courses in Alberta and BC list no green fee on public directories, so you can try a round before you fill a closet with plastic. Check each course's linked listing for hours and access before you go.
What "beginner set" means here
Disc golf is like golf, only with a disc and a metal basket. A beginner set is usually three discs:
- Putter: slow and straight. Use it for approaches and for the basket.
- Midrange: controlled throws, roughly 50–90 m.
- Fairway driver: more distance than a mid, without the full-power driver wobble.
You don't need a dozen molds on day one. Start with base plastic. It's cheaper, and that matters when a disc decides it lives in the pond.

- Fairway driver, ideally an understable one that's easier while you learn form. Fairway driver on Amazon.ca Affiliate link
- Small disc golf bag that holds 3–8 discs, water and a towel. Small disc golf bag on Amazon.ca Affiliate link

How to choose in a Canadian shop
- Ask for base plastic first. Easier on the wallet when you lose one in the trees.
- Ignore the max-distance numbers on the flight plate until your throw is consistent. A 13-speed driver won't fix a beginner arm.
- Feel it in your hand. A rim that feels comfortable beats a fancy stamp.
Buy in Canada (CA$) or order from the US?
Local CA$ (when you need it this week, or want a bag or basket): try a Canadian shop with pickup or domestic shipping. In the Edmonton area, Wildman Disc Golf is an online shop with local pickup info and a Beginner Friendly collection (plain link; not an NWW affiliate). Confirm hours and stock on their site. More Canadian shops are on disc golf gear.
US catalogue (molds you can't find locally): see the Infinite Discs box below.
Big-box store or disc shop?
Both can work for a first set. Some practical differences:
- Selection: big-box stores tend to carry a few boxed starter sets and a short list of single discs, and stock varies by store and season. Disc golf shops carry more molds and brands, plus bags and baskets.
- Plastic and weight: a boxed set decides these for you. At a disc shop you can usually pick the plastic type and weight of each disc.
- Advice: at a disc shop you can ask about flight numbers and which molds suit a newer thrower. At a big-box store, read the flight numbers on each disc yourself.
- Price: both sell entry-level discs, and prices change with brand, plastic and sales. Compare a boxed set with three single base-plastic discs before you buy.
Either way, start with a putter, a midrange and a fairway driver. Canadian disc shops are listed on disc golf gear.
Infinite Discs (US catalogue)
Large selection of molds and plastics, with community flight numbers on many discs. Useful when you can't find a mold locally.

FAQ
How many discs do I need to start?
Three: a putter, a midrange and a fairway driver. Enough for most courses.
What's a good first putter?
A straight, slow putter such as the Innova DX Aviar is a common first choice for short throws and putts.
Starter set or separate discs?
A starter set is the simplest way to get three matched discs. Buying separately lets you choose brands you like.
Where can I play?
Many Alberta and BC city parks have free 9- or 18-hole layouts listed on public directories. Use our disc golf map. Confirm access before you go.
