Mainly hydrogen sulphide (sulphur) springs and acidic alum springs. Each spring in the Nasu area is different, which makes bath-hopping fun.

Tradition says Kano Saburo Yukihiro discovered the Shika-no-yu ('deer bath') spring in 630. Nara-era records of 738 show an official travelling to bathe at 'Nasu no yu'. The poet Matsuo Basho visited the nearby Sessho-seki stone in the Edo era.
