The water

Mostly sodium-calcium chloride springs (about 80% of sources), with some chloride-sulphate and sulphate springs.

History

Legend says boiling water once gushed from the sea, giving Atami ('hot sea') its name. Tokugawa Ieyasu stayed for a seven-day cure in 1604, and later shoguns had Atami water carried to Edo Castle. Ozaki Koyo's novel 'Konjiki Yasha' made the town famous nationwide.
