Quick facts

The water

A sodium-calcium chloride spring: neutral and salty.

History

Tradition says Emperor Kinmei (reigned 6th century) was cured of a skin disease by Akiu water carried to the capital, and the spring was honoured as an imperial 'Mi-yu'. The Sato family served as spring keepers for centuries; after Date Masamune came to Sendai, they ran the lord's private bath, the origin of today's Hotel Sakan.
