2. Pick a short course

  1. Open the Canada disc golf map.
  2. Look for courses with many holes under 300 ft, or a 9-hole layout (use the "Mostly short holes" filter).
  3. Prefer courses listed as free to play.
  4. Skip private or members-only courses until you have access (for example, Niska Paskwâhk in Edmonton is EDGA members only).
  5. Confirm hours and access on the linked PDGA, city or club page before you go.

Edmonton starting points (from listed fields, not a ranking): The Hills lists all holes under 300 ft and free on PDGA (EDGA page). Rundle Park lists most holes under 300 ft and free (PDGA). Confirm before you go.

3. Etiquette, short

Wait for the group ahead · Stay behind the thrower · Help look for lost discs · Pack out trash · Respect other park users.

For a longer newcomer list, see club pages such as Disc Golf Calgary — Getting Started.

4. Basic rules

Each hole, throw from the tee until the disc is in the basket; count your throws; lowest total wins. Details and penalties are in the Official Rules of Disc Golf — start with the PDGA introduction.

5. Try a recreational league

PDGA basics

What it is: The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is the sport's main governing body. It runs the public course directory, event search, the Official Rules of Disc Golf, and membership. NorthWest Wa is not a PDGA partner or affiliate — we link their public pages for facts only.

How to get a PDGA number: Join on the PDGA's own site. First-time members receive a lifetime PDGA number (see Join or Renew for 2026). Start at Join the PDGA. After you join, your number is in the confirmation email; you can also find it by signing in to your PDGA account. Current fees and membership types are listed on the join page — check there before you pay; we don't restate fees here.

You do not need a PDGA number to play most public park courses. A current membership is typically required to compete in PDGA-sanctioned events — confirm on the event page and PDGA membership FAQ.
