Three discs, a light bag, and a free afternoon. That's the whole entry fee. Many municipal courses in Alberta and BC cost nothing to play, so you can try a round before you commit to a closet full of plastic.
What "beginner set" means here
Disc golf is like golf, only with a disc and a metal basket. A beginner set is usually three discs:
- Putter: slow and straight. Use it for approaches and for the basket.
- Midrange: controlled throws, roughly 50–90 m.
- Fairway driver: more distance than a mid, without the wobble of a full-power driver.
You don't need a dozen molds on day one. Start with base plastic. It's cheaper, and that matters when a disc decides it lives in the pond now.
Starter kit checklist
- Starter 3-disc set: putter, mid and driver in one box. The simplest first buy. Starter 3-disc set on Amazon.ca
- Innova DX Aviar putter: the classic straight putter. Innova DX Aviar putter on Amazon.ca
- Midrange disc, such as an Innova DX Roc or any base-plastic mid. Midrange disc (Innova DX Roc or similar) on Amazon.ca
- Fairway driver, ideally an understable one that's easier to throw while you learn form. Fairway driver on Amazon.ca
- Small disc golf bag that holds 3–8 discs, water and a towel. Small disc golf bag on Amazon.ca
Trail add-ons (optional)
- Towel for wet grass and muddy discs. Disc golf towel on Amazon.ca
- Water bottle, because rounds take longer than you think. Water bottle on Amazon.ca
How to choose in a Canadian shop
- Ask for base plastic first. It's easier on the wallet when you lose one in the trees.
- Ignore the max-distance numbers on the flight plate until your throw is consistent. A 13-speed driver won't fix a beginner arm (we checked).
- Feel it in your hand. A rim that feels comfortable beats a fancy stamp.

FAQ
How many discs do I need to start?
Three: a putter, a midrange and a fairway driver. Plenty for most courses.
What's a good first putter?
Pick a straight, slow putter like the Innova DX Aviar. It's easy to control for short throws and putts.
Starter set or separate discs?
A starter set is the simplest way to get three matched discs. Buying them separately lets you choose brands you like.
Where can I play?
Many Alberta and BC city parks have free 9- or 18-hole layouts. Use our disc golf map at /live-well/disc-golf-map.html.
